Tough, stylish jacket that still works well

The 8 Miler won our jackets test in 2005, and while the 07 samples weren't ready for this test, it's still a great combo of casual style and trail performance.

The soft, quiet Schoeller 3X Dry fabric shrugs off rain, stains and crashes, yet breathes well on steady rides. A mesh liner and fleece collar stop it feeling clammy, while extra cooling's available from chest pockets that double as vents, a main zip that opens top and bottom and a yoke vent (if not wearing a bag).

The cut is slim with subtle detailing, and the close-fit long sleeves and tall neck work well (though the tail's a bit short). It's pretty light (366g) and packable. The Extra Miler (£110) with zip-off sleeves will be out for winter.
