Warm and practical Merino wool base layer

BikeRadar score3.5/5

What did we do before merino wool? I just wore some other vest, or even a second cycling jersey, and didn't think anything of it. It's fair to say, though, that this 100 per cent Australian wool vest is, weight for weight, more snug and more comfortable than practically all alternatives.

It has a fitted cut, flatlock seams, and enough stretch for a really close fit. The long sleeves add quite a bit of warmth in winter, and during the test the Wallaroo was first out of the wardrobe for any chilly ride. Being wool, it still insulates if it gets damp and you can wear it a few times before it starts to pong.

If I could choose a base layer as a gift, this one would be at the top of the list. If I were buying one with my own cash then I would probably get a Helly Hansen Lifa top, because it's half the price and still does the business. So it depends how much you're happy to spend.

Note that the washing symbols are Canadian: it's machine washable at 40 degrees.
