The Filter isn’t a new shoe, but it’s great at protecting toes while providing a stiffer than you’d expect link between foot and pedal. The ‘as used by Steve Peat’ title doesn’t hurt to turn new riders onto this skate-shoe-inspired example, but the ride experience backs up the celebrity endorsement.
A chunky, tacky rubber outsole is limited for outright grip in slick mud, but on most other off-road surfaces it can find traction. The cleat pocket can be a bit deep, especially with CrankBrothers pedals/cleats, requiring careful rubber shaving to ensure a clean engagement. Shimano SPDs were fine straight away though.
The lace closure can be used with or without the supplied Velcro lace saver strap, and it helps make the shoe feel a bit more secure on the foot. The heel cup can feel a bit vague. The upper is well made and designed to take a beating, with added hard rubber protection on the toes and a reinforced heel counter.
