Shimano M530 Deore/ES51 BB Chainset review

Deore is due a serious integrated crank makeover soon but this old school set up from the Big S is still a classic in terms of ultra long life. The Hollowtech arms are super stiff, tough as a crow bar and reasonably light as well. We've never had any creak or installation/removal problems from the eight splined Octalink connection either.

Our review
A classic Shimano crank and excellent value for money.

The middle ring is a bit soft (swap it for a steel one when it wears) but the steel inner will work as a winching gear for years. Shifts are unerringly smooth in all gears too.

Octalink bottom brackets aren't as convenient to whip in or out compared to Hollowtech options but they last much longer than the external units that replaced them. The almost everlasting XT spec ES71 bottom bracket is only £5 more than the Deore spec ES51 one here too. But, for the quality crank and BB you're getting, the price is unbeatable.
