Campagnolo Veloce UT compact plus bottom bracket cups review£189.49

Best sub-£200 crankset

BikeRadar score4.5/5

This is the cheapest chainset in Campagnolo's Ultra Torque (UT) range. At the heart of the design is a toothed joint that’s used to marry the two halves of the axle together.

By doing away with the usual clamped arrangement on the left-hand crank, the lower resultant Q-factor means there’s more ankle clearance.

The joint’s central position also helps lessen twisting forces. Meanwhile, the Enhanced Shifting Performance (ESP) aims to make shifts both quiet and fast.

Despite its more modest price, shifts from small to large chainrings only fractionally trail the more expensive Shimano Ultegra SL.

The Veloce also scored a high nine out of 10 for stiffness, showing that an aluminium chainset can be as stiff as costly carbon models.
