If pure mountain climbing performance is what makes you tick then you must get a pair of these DT Swiss XR 1540 wheels, it's as simple as that.

DT are well known for making light, durable and easy-to-work-on hubs, and these are no different. They can be also be stripped without specialist tools.

The hubs are mated with 28 flat-bladed DT spokes (on both the front and rear wheels) to DT's own 17mm disc-specific rims.

OK, so they're about twice the price of what you could pay for a lightish XC wheelset, but then the whole of this wheelset is made and hand built in Switzerland, and each pair is shipped with wheel bags, QRs, a spoke key and converters for those who aren't set up to run the Shimano Centrelock system.

What are they like to ride? We've been running ours with some new Hutchinson Bulldog 1.8in tyres that are perfect for cutting through the winter slop on the hunt for traction.

You notice the low weight of the wheels from the first turn of the pedals; they spin with less effort and roll freely on their precision bearings. They'll take knocks - the tight build shrugs off rock strikes - but be aware that these wheels aren't designed to be jumped or hucked. They're begging to be aimed up a long technical climb where they will transform any cross-country bike they're fitted to.
