Lapierre's new hardtails look sorted and they're surprisingly inexpensive

All new UK-specific models are ready to tackle the likes of Calibre and Boardman

Lapierre and its UK distributor Raleigh have just launched a new range of keenly priced hardtails, which takes direct aim at the dominance of the likes of Calibre, Boardman and Pinnacle — behemoths of the direct-sales model that have dominated this price point for years now.

The all-new Edge XM and AM ranges have been designed as a direct collaboration between Lapierre and Raleigh, and are intended solely for the UK market.

On paper, at least, the bikes look properly sorted, with competitive pricing, progressive geometry and good specs across the board.

What’s particularly interesting is that the bikes will be sold via independent bike shops.

Being able to walk into a bricks-and-mortar shop and walk out with a bike still holds real value for many consumers and, should the bikes perform well, has the potential to really shake up buying habits and eat away at the dominance of the big direct-sale players.

Lapierre Edge XM and AM range overview and spec highlights

The cheapest bikes in the new ranges are the XM models. There are four 100mm travel XM hardtails available, starting with the Edge XM 827 at £399, which is mechanical disc and Shimano Tourney-equipped .

The AM range is a 120mm platform, and its Deore-equipped Edge AM 527 is priced at £649, while the top of the range, plus-tyre equipped 827+ rises to £1,099.

The geometry on the AM looks sorted, with a slack-ish 66.5-degree head angle, which is paired with 435mm chainstays and a generous front centre across all sizes.

All bikes run from sizes S through XL.

For £749 you get an SLX-based drivetrain, a dropper post and a basic, but perfectly serviceable, SR Suntour fork — exactly the sort of package that’s ripe for upgrade, but still great fun out of the box.

If you’re based beyond the borders of the UK and like the look of these bikes you’re out of luck for the time being, unfortunately. However, there are rumblings about the possibility of the bikes being available in Lapierre’s other territories at some point, depending on market demand.
