BikeRadar takes on the Dolomiti Superbike mountain bike race

Along with two lucky readers who joined us for the legendary event

Back in February, BikeRadar teamed up with Fizik to provide one lucky reader and their friend the opportunity to take part in the 2016 Dolomiti Superbike mountain bike race.

Now in its 22nd edition, the Dolomiti Superbike is one of the largest mountain bike races in Europe, and each year attracts a sellout grid that’s limited to 5,000 places. Riders can opt for either a 59km or 120km route, both of which are guaranteed to give you an exclusive and unforgettable tour of the Italian Alps.

The lucky winner turned out to be Nicholas Kennedy, a London-based rider with well-balanced passion for road and mountain bikes. Perhaps more fortunate still was Nicholas’ chosen friend for the trip, former mountain bike guide Ben Phillips.

Staying just a handful of metres away from the start line in the charming South Tyrolian village of Villabassa, both riders were suitably pampered in the days prior to the race and were able to sample the breathtaking scenery of the World Heritage-recognised location.

After being supplied with race-ready Cannondale bicycles kitted out with performance saddles, pedals and shoes from Fizik, the lucky pair joined BikeRadar’s Oliver Woodman and took to the mountains for a crack at the race itself.

Unashamedly intimidated by the sea of bronzed, lean competitors, the pale unshaven Brits were easy to pick out as they took on the shorter of the two routes. A mixture of determination, adrenaline and good fortune saw all three riders place within 40 minutes or so of one and other at the finish line.

It was amazing to join 5,000 riders hurtling around the course, which has some pretty brutal climbs and awesome descents

Competition winner Nick had this to say following the ride: “Dolomiti Superbike is a real hidden gem. The Dolomites are a picture perfect backdrop for the race and the whole atmosphere in Villabassa in the days leading up to the event was fantastic. It was amazing to join 5,000 riders hurtling around the course, which has some pretty brutal climbs and awesome descents. Difficult to think of a biking experience (anywhere) that can top it.  Big thanks to BikeRadar and Fizik, who were the perfect hosts. Now it's just a case of booking to go back next year!”
