The Dragon ride is a circular, 100 & 150km non competitive road cycle challenge ride over the hills and valleys of South Wales. Promoted and organised by BreakAway Cycling the event is designed for experienced cyclist’s – unlike shorter charity rides this is not a leisure ride and should only be attempted by reasonably fit and competent riders. The event takes place onSunday 19th June – three weeks before the Tour of France Etape participation ride; why not use the DRAGON RIDE as training for the Etape?

BreakAway Cycling have big plans for the 2005 edition, hoping to introduce timing for the first time. The maximum entry will be 600 and the minimum age is 14.

The start and finish will be at Bridgend, South Wales. (Bridgend is situated between Cardiff and Swansea with good road and rails links). The route will be identified with direction arrows and there will be refreshment points along the route along with mechanical back up, medical and rescue/support vehicles.

The route takes in two classic UK category 1 climbs as used in the past on the Tour of Britain, for the longer route a steep, short, sharp climb in the heart of the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park. The latter part of the ride winds its way down the former mining valleys of the Rhondda Ogmore and Garw.

New for 2005 is a climb on the outward leg from Pontrhydyfen to Cimla, a slightly longer loop in the Brecon Beacons to Defynnog (which may involve an additional 18% climb, depending on how nasty we feel!). Finally a climb over Llangeinor mountain road which replace the New Mill bends at Blackmill and the hard final climb up past the Parc Prison.
