The 2008 World Track Championships will take place at Manchester Velodrome, the International Cycling Union’s management committee announced on Friday. The committee was meeting in Holland prior to this weekend’s World Cyclo-Cross Championships at Zeddam.
Manchester has already hosted the Track Worlds in 1996 and 2000, and was bidding for the 2008 championships against Polish capital Warsaw. The UCI gave its backing to Manchester based on successful past championships and the fact that Warsaw’s velodrome has not yet been built.
The UCI that the 2007 and 2008 World Junior Road Championships will take place at Aguascalientes, Mexico, and Cape Town, South Africa, respectively.
Earlier this week Mayor of London Ken Livingstone confirmed that the Tour de France will be starting in the British capital in July 2007.
