Ag2r still have Pro Tour hopes
Ag2r have joined Acqua e Sapone and Phonak in requesting a chance to put their case for inclusion in
PICTURE BY TIM DE WAELE Following yesterday’s story on this site about Acqua e Sapone’s management team making their case for inclusion in the Pro Tour next Monday in Switzerland, this morning’s edition of L’Equipe is reporting that the Ag2r team will be doing the same thing. Both squads will be hoping that even at this late stage they might replace Phonak in next season’s top level racing circuit. Ag2r team boss Vincent Lavenu told L’Equipe that he is due to appear before the three-member licensing commission at midday on Monday. “We are going there simply to explain that we are entirely convinced that we have the capacity and means to enter the Pro Tour,” said Lavenu. Lavenu was scathing in his condemnation of his team’s rejection from the Pro Tour, which was, he said, due to the fact that four French teams had already been selected. “For the past five months we have been asked to provide the requirements needed for the Pro Tour and we’ve done this. I understand that political and strategic interests come into play. But I am sure that our application is worthy and if there is a place I hope the people at the UCI will be sensitive to my arguments.” As well as Ag2r and Acqua e Sapone pressing their respective cases for inclusion in the Pro Tour next Monday, the Swiss Phonak team will be appealing against the decision to sideline them from the circuit.
