CSC's Ivan Basso is set to double up at the Tour and Giro next season, potentially riding his home tPICTURE BY TIM DE WAELE Unlike most other serious contenders for the Tour de France throne, CSC's Ivan Basso is very likely to aim for overall success in not only the Tour but also the Giro next season, writes Susanne Horsdal. "We haven't decided yet if Ivan is to aim 100 per cent for the Giro. We need to see the parcours first, but we've given it a lot of thought and are currently very positive towards the idea," said Team CSC manager Bjarne Riis at a press conference on Tuesday. If the first week of the Giro isn't too demanding the plan is to schedule Basso's race programme in a way that will enable him to peak at both the Giro and the Tour. "I believe that Ivan is up to it, and if he can win the Giro no one can take that result away from him," said Riis, who at the same time admitted that the talented Italian, who finished third in this year's Tour de France, had had a contract offer from Discovery Channel earlier this season. "Basso told me that he'd had an offer. Of course he was tempted. Money is always tempting. (.) But I told him: If you go, I go. This team is to a great extent built around him and of course you have a dialogue with him about new undertakings, riders and so on, but he also knows where he'll be able to ride fast, and that's with us," said Riis.
