Big Freeze shuts down most UK racing

Oldham wins final North East 'cross series round

After turning in a disappointing performance in the Cyclo-Cross World Championships the previous week, Paul Oldham (Hope Factory Racing) returned to winning ways in the final round of the North East League at RichmondSchool in North Yorkshire on Sunday. It was one of few races to survive the effects of the weekend's weather.

The runner-up in the National Trophy series, Oldham rode the event to boost his confidence after a disappointing end to the season, but also as a favour to Hope Factory Racing team-mate and organiser Keith Murray.

It proved to be a convincing victory, with Oldham lapping all but one rider as he cruised round the continental-style course to win by more than four minutes.

With transponders fitted to all riders’ legs to give the event a professional edge, Oldham was 4:10 ahead of MTS Cyclesport rider Stephen Ward, while nobody else could get within one lap of classy Oldham.

Derwentside CC’s Tony Glover completed the podium in the Kudu Bikes Cross, which was the sixth and final round of the North East series.

Talented young Hetton Hawks rider Adam Martin settled for second in the youth race, just 25 seconds behind JoeHome (K Home International).

Martin crashed on the first lap and then suffered a puncture mid-way through the race, but still recovered to salvage second spot by seven seconds from team-mate Ross Landon in third.

While Cleveland Wheelers’ William Brown was fourth, Hetton Hawks continued their domination of the youth league with under-14 rider Josh Moody and Andrew May fifth and sixth respectively.

Gil Jessop time trial cancelled due to ice

Freezing conditions on the course at Hungry Hill near East Clandon in Surrey forced organisers to cancel the 2009 edition of the Gil Jessop Memorial time trial over a sporting 14-mile course.

Twenty four hours before the event there was considerable surface water on the course, and with temperatures forecast to plummet overnight the organisers decided to cancel the event.

By 10am on Sunday the expected cold temperatures had led to several icy patches along the course, leaving many of the region’s time triallists without an event.

Snow scuppers Luton & West Midlands 'cross

*The heavy snow and freezing conditions also led to the postponement of the fifth round of the Central Cyclo-Cross League in Luton on Sunday. The Icknield Road Club event looks set to be re-scheduled to a date in the next few weeks.

*The final round of the West Midlands Cyclo-Cross League  will be re-staged on February 22 after Sunday’s event fell victim to the weather.

While the car park was fine, large sections of the course at Borough Hill in Daventry had a thick covering of snow, forcing organisers from Rugby Velo to postpone the race.

The venue has several radio masts supported by large concrete blocks, many of which were hidden by the snow which made a safe race impossible.

Barring any accidents, Phil Blacker (Wyre Forest CRC) looks set to be crowned as senior champion in the league, which is one of the most popular in the country.
