Cancellara wins second world time trial title

Swiss crushes the opposition in Stuttgart

Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara successfully defended his world time-trial crown in Stuttgart on Thursday with a superb performance at the world road championships.

The 26-year-old took gold in a winning time of 55minutes 41.35seconds over the two laps of the 45 kilometres course.

Cancellara said his only worry before the race was the morning rain. "It's true, I had in the corner of my mind the thought to avoid a fall. It was the only thing which was making me nervous," said Cancellara who fell once in the rain during the Tour de France.

But the weather conditions improved during the day and favoured the later riders such as Cancellara who didn't think this affected the result. "Those who were in the first wave weren't favourites. I don't think that (weather conditions) affected the result," he said.

Hungarian Laszlo Bodrogi was second in a time of 56:33, while Stef Clement of the Netherlands was third in 56:39.

German Bert Grabsch came fourth ahead of his compatriot Sebastian Lang. But last year's silver medallist, American David Zabriskie, came 12th while Briton Bradley Wiggins took 10th place, better than compatriot David Millar who finished 18th.

It was Cancellara's second consecutive gold after he finished one minute and a half ahead of Zabriskie in Salzburg, Austria.
