Tour Down Under stage winner Alberto Contador wins what should be the key stage at Semana Catalana,
PIC BY TDWSPORT.COM Alberto Contador won what is likely to be the decisive stage in the Semana Catalana stage race in north-east Spain, finishing seven seconds ahead of Barloworld's Peio Arreitunandia at the Pal summit finish today. Tour Down Under stage winner Contador now holds a similar lead over the same rider in the overall standings, with his Liberty Seguros team-mate Koldo Gil a further six seconds back. Once again this season, the Liberty Seguros team showed that they have stepped up a notch or two from last season. Three riders - David de la Fuente (Saunier Duval), Alexandre Moos (Phonak) and Antonio Olmo (Comunitat Valenciana) - reached the initial ramps of the Pal climb with a lead of about 90 seconds, but as Liberty's Isidro Nozal and Dariusz Baranowski lined the chase group out behind the trio were soon overhauled. Liberty team leader Roberto Heras, making his first appearance of this season as a domestique for Gil and Contador, reduced the lead group to 14 riders. Paris-Nice stage winner Gilberto Simoni was also prominent, but it was Contador who made the winning move 2km from the finish. With the final stage finishing outside the Catalan factory of Liberty Seguros co-sponsor Wurth, it is clear that Liberty boss Manolo Saiz and his tactically astute team of riders will be difficult to shake from the leading positions. Tomorrow's stage offers little opportunity for surprises, with just two third-cat climbs on the run from Baga to Palau-Solita i Plegamans.
