Baden Cooke got off to a winning start with his new Unibet.com team when he took the final sprint in today's GP d'Ouverture La Marseillaise. The Australian edged out former Francaise des Jeux team-mate Philippe Gilbert and world championship bronze medallist Anthony Geslin at the end of the opening race of the European season.

The news was less good for another Australian. Simon Gerrans, who won last week's Tour Down Under, was one of three riders taking to hospital following a crash in the bunch 500 metres from the line. His Ag2r team-mate Philip Deignan was also involved, as was Italy's Maurizio Carta (Miche).
