Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Fondital) looks set for the Giro d'Italia after winning this week's important warm up race, Giro del Trentino. Cunego scored his third victory in the tough, four-day stage race run in the northern part of Italy. He laid the foundation for his success after winning stages 1 and 2, while Stefano Garzelli (Acqua e Sapone) claimed stage 3 and Maximiliano Richeze (Ceramica Panaria) won stage 4. Second place overall went to Michele Scarponi (Acqua e Sapone). Like Ivan Basso, the Italian has been summoned to appear in front of the Italian Olympic Committee on May 2 to answer questions relating to Operacion Puerto. Unlike Basso, he has not been suspended by his own team, who are giving him their support. Scarponi also won the overall classification of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali recently.
