The Fat Face Night Ride 2008 took place in Scarborough over the weekend, where 300 riders hit the makeshift downhill course before the adverse weather conditions called a premature end to proceedings.
Mojo/Orange rider Dan Stanbridge won the race and the £500 prize with a time of 1:12.630, ahead of Solid Bikes rider James Hughes (1:12.876) and Team BikeRadar’s Neil Donoghue (1:13.194).
In the women’s race, Tracey Moseley topped the podium with a time of 1:22.363, ahead of Halfords Bike Hut rider Helen Gaskell (1:22.694) and Giant’s Katy Curd (1:24.966).
Dan Stanbridge said: "The course was really good and it was great to see so many people here. When the conditions are tricky there's always a compromise between going downhill as fast as you can and getting down in one piece."
Indeed, there were a number of casualties on the course throughout the day, some of whom were taken to Scarborough Hospital with suspected broken bones.
Will Longden, Team BikeRadar manager said: "The event was really good fun, a good end of season get together. Unfortunately the weather was evil, rain and strong winds making some parts of the track a bit tricky, adding to the challenge!
Plenty of locals braved the weather and showed up to watch which made for a good atmosphere at the finish line. I took a tumble on my run, a puncture on the steps followed by sloppy wood was not a great combination."
Commenting on the event, Ian Williams, Fat Face events manager, said: "Despite weather conditions against them it was great to see so many locals battling with the wind and rain to spectate, surviving for as long as they did!
The speed at which these guys come down the race track is phenomenal and the precision and skill required is exceptional and a real spectacle to watch.”
