Stuart O'Grady took his best result of what has been a fractured first season with the Cofidis team when he got the better of US Postal's George Hincapie in a two-up sprint at the end of the Dauphin's fifth stage in Sisteron. The pair had been part of a strong eight-man break who went away after 55 kilometres. With the English-speaking duo were Baden Cooke, Jrme Pineau, Pierrick Fedrigo, Yuriy Krivtsov, Victor Hugo Pe¤a and Nicolas Jalabert. Perhaps feaful of Cooke's pace, O'Grady and Hincapie went off on their own at about the 100km mark. They were chased most of the way into the finish by Pineau, Cooke and Jalabert, but stayed clear to dispute the stage between them. O'Grady's has looked pretty quick throughout this race so far, and the victory was arguably his best since he was part of Credit Agricole's team time trial success at the 2001 Tour de France. The pair's six-minute lead on the peloton also boosted the Australian back up into the top 10 overall, although he remains some significant way behind race leader Iban Mayo.
