First Kona Mash-Up of '09 this weekend

Who'll put in the best times on Afan Forest's great trails?

The first Kona Mash-Up 2009 powered by Mountain Biking UK magazine takes place this weekend (12-14 June) at Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre in South Wales.

After a successful inaugural event last year, the format and timing have been improved to make sure the 2009 events are even better. So far around 350 riders have entered one, or even both, of the two categories – enduro and technical.

Participants in the enduro race will ride a 40km loop taking in both the White's Level and July trails, with various timed downhill, singletrack and uphill sections.

The technical category is aimed at those with less of a fondness for climbing. Based on White's Level, riders will be able to cruise their way up and will only be timed on the downhill sections.

Staff from our sister publication MBUK will be on hand to dole out Spirit Awards to those riders who show extraordinary guts, determination or camaraderie, so even if you don’t post the fastest time you could still be a winner!

Registration runs from 5-8pm on Friday and 8am-12pm on Saturday. You can enter online until tonight, or just turn up on the day, in which case there will be a £5 surcharge.

Riders can set off any time between 9am and 12pm on Saturday. The timing will finish at 5pm on Saturday so only runs completed by then will count.

The event ends after the prizegiving presentation at 7pm on Saturday but riders are welcome to stay on until Sunday and spend a day riding Afan Forest's trails.

The event village will include kit from Kona, Torq, Muc-Off, Sombrio, Ritchey, CycleOps, NoTubes, Saris, Orange, Nicolai, Gemini, Commencal, Santa Cruz, Cove, Bionicon, Intense and Merida. Kona will have a range of bikes for demo in conjunction with Skyline Cycles.
