Pedro's are introducing some new tools for 2010, including a quick-release skewer/multi-tool, a multi-chain tool, an improved Master Tool Kit and a more earth-friendly Ice Wax 2.0 chain lubricant.
Tullio was no tool fool back in the 1930s
Multi-tools are usually carried in your jersey pocket or saddle bag but Pedro's have come up with a new concept in the form of their new Tülio quick-release device, which houses 4/5/6/8mm hex wrenches, a Phillips head screwdriver, a chain tool and a pair of spoke wrenches (3.0-3.2 gauge) in a 99g package.
Tülio is a play on the name of Tullio Campagnolo, the Italian racer who invented the cam-actuated quick-release mechanism in the 1930s after suffering a race-ending wheel removal issue on the Croce d'Aune.

One chain tool to rule them all
As the number of cogs on the rear cassette climbs every few years (it's now reached 11, thanks to Campagnolo) and chains get narrower, mechanics are left rifling through their tool boxes to find a chain tool that fits. To address this, Pedro's have come up with the US$99 (approx £60) Evolver multi-chain tool.
The Evolver has been designed to offer improved performance and 11-speed compatibility. It boasts several patent-pending features, including a Speed Dial which allows you to set it up for different size chains (including Campagnolo 11-speed, where the joining pin needs to be flared) and a Retracting Pin Guide, which encloses the guide pin to prevent misalignment.
“To account for chains of different widths, most chain tools have a bridge that is much more narrow than the internal width of the chain," said Jay Seiter, Evolver inventor and Pedro’s research and development engineer. "Though this has worked fairly well in the past, the addition of 10- and 11-speed chains has stressed this setup. It is simply not precise enough to handle the new high-tolerance chains.
"This is because the narrow bridge allows the chain to sit misaligned with the pin and anvil and leads to damage of the chain or to the pin of the tool. With Evolver, we address that.”
- Weight: 375g
- Number of tools: 4
- Compatibility: all 1/8in and 3/32in single- and multi-gear chains

Master Tool Kit 3.0
Park Tool have traditionally ruled the roost when it comes to equipping professionals and shop mechanics, but Pedro's have taken notes since the launch of their Master Tool Kit a few years ago and are releasing an update called the MTK 3.0 for 2010.
The US$939 (approx £580), 65-piece professional tool kit comes in a custom resin case, with a lifetime warranty. It includes refinements suggested by mechanics from the Garmin/Slipstream road team and LUNA Chix women’s team, and tools not found anywhere else, such as Pedro’s patent-pending Vise Whip, Torx Y and GO! chain lube.
"As a professional mechanic, my toolbox is my means to put food on the table," said Damion Shanks, team mechanic and service course manager for Garmin/Slipstream, who are currently racing in the Tour de France. "Pedro's new toolbox will be a great choice for any mechanic, be they a novice or wrenching for a ProTour team. The new kit provides all of the essentials needed to build and maintain today's advanced bicycles."
“The current selection of tool boxes for people in our line of work is slim," said Chris Mathis, head mechanic and equipment manager for LUNA Chix. "There has never been anything made specifically to put the tools we use together with a solid toolbox,”
The 65-piece kit includes:
- 8-piece open/ratchet box wrenches
- Y Torx wrench

Pedro's Ice Wax 2.0: improved and more earth-friendly
To relaunch their Ice Wax lubricant, Pedro’s worked with members of the chemistry program at a leading technical university in nearby Cambridge, Massachusetts whose name sounds like “emm, eye, tea” (Pedro's are not allowed to use their name).
"With cyclists in their ranks, enthusiasm for the challenge was rife and the project took on a life of its own," said Pedro's CEO Christopher Zigmont. "The result is Ice Wax 2.0, now made with a biodegradable, natural wax base. Our long-lasting barrier coat is the cleanest lube on the market.
“I would argue that Ice Wax 2.0 is a significant green step for outdoor sports and cycling. It sought to replace, in a sustainable fashion, the desirable performance characteristics that were created in a toxic way. In that pursuit, we achieved our sustainability and simplicity goals and exceeded the performance along the way."
A 12-ounce (340ml) bottle of Pedro's Ice Wax 2.0 costs US$19.95 (£13.99). For more information about any of these products, visit www.pedros.com.
