A tower supporting a gondola lift at the world famous Whistler resort has collapsed, leaving 12 people injured and 53 stranded.
In the summer months the resort is used as a mountain biking trail park, in the winter it’s a ski resort.

None of the gondola cars broke free of the cable, but one hit a house and another landed on a bus shelter.
About 20 cars – each able to hold up to eight passengers – were stranded.
An eyewitness told the Vancouver Sun newspaper: “We saw a lift tower had broken in half and the gondola was hanging. There were still people in the bottom half.”
An investigation is underway by Whistler Blackcomb and the British Columbia Safety Authority.
