Discovery Channel's Vladimir Gusev won Tuesday's 5.5km prologue time trial of the Deutschland Tour in Dusseldorf. In wet and windy conditions that affected the numbers who came out to watch, the Russian finished just a tenth of a second ahead of T-Mobile's Linus Gerdemann, with another young German, Gerolsteiner's Sebastian Lang, a further second down in third place.

With Jan Ullrich absent having been implicated in the Operacion Puerto investigation in Spain, defending champion Levi Leipheimer started the race as favourite. However, the American did not have a great day, finishing 42 seconds down on the winner in 111th place.
