Ivan Gutierrez, runner-up in last year's World Time Trial Championship, holds the narrowest of leads over Thomas Lvkvist after two short stages on the second day of the Tour of the Mediterranean.

In the morning stage to the summit of Mont Faron above the naval port of Toulon, the Caisse d'Epargne (as the Illes Balears' team are known in France) rider took a four-man sprint ahead of Lvkvist, Rinaldo Nocentini (Acqua e Sapone) and Pietro Caucchioli (Crdit Agricole). That gave the Spaniard the overall lead.

This afternoon's 18km team time trial was won by Caucchioli's Crdit Agricole team, but Gutierrez and his team-mates finished close enough to Crdit Agricole and Francaise des Jeux to prevent Lvkvist and Caucchioli taking the lead - although it was an extremely close-run thing.
