Second-year Comunitat Valenciana pro Manuel Lloret took the first win of his career when he outsmarted the experienced Santos Gonzalez (3 Molinos Resort) at the end of the second stage of the Ruta del Sol in Jaen this afternoon. The stage also saw a rejig of the overall standings, as Carlos Garcia Quesada replaced his brother Adolfo as race leader thanks to a higher finish in the peloton. The pair are split by Kaiku's Rodrigo Garcia, although all three riders remain tied on time.

As on day one, a break that went early in the day decided the stage between them. After several attempts to get clear right from the start, nine riders did manage to get away from the peloton after 15km. Although not given the same huge leeway that stage one's breakaways got, the nine had plenty of time in hand over the peloton coming into the finish.

In the tough, rolling countryside around Jaen, Gonzalez and Lloret gradually weeded out their breakaway companions, until just the two of them remained at the front. Gonzalez made the first jump for the line, but Lloret countered and won at a canter.

The rider from Alicante thanked his team-mates for boosting his confidence before the race and encouraging him to ride in an attacking manner given his good early season form.
