Iban Mayo has been mobbed by fans since winning the Dauphine Libere, and has had lots of offers, somIf there was the slightest doubt about Iban Mayo's soaring status as a sporting icon in Spain it has been swept away with the news that tawdry gossip magazine Interviu has offered the Euskaltel rider what is believed to be a significant amount of money to pose naked. Mayo declined the offer, but did agree to be interviewed by the Spanish mag that usually attracts sales by getting aspiring actresses to reveal all. The pressure on Mayo has increased substantially since he won the Dauphin Libr earlier this month. In recent days he was mobbed in a Durango supermarket as he was trying to buy his weekly groceries and forced to leave without buying anything, and has told his manager, Sabino Angoitia, that he is exhausted because of all the attention. Speaking to AS, Angoitia said of the offer from Interviu, "Iban has got a good sense of humour and took it as a joke. It is clear he doesn't need to call attention to himself by doing things of this type. At least not at the moment." Angoitia revealed Mayo has been forced to turn off his mobile phone due to the huge quantity of calls he was receiving. When he's turned it back on he's found up to 80 missed calls and his answerphone full. As one of the key rivals to Lance Armstrong, Mayo is getting his first taste of the huge pressures that the American has had to deal with for years. The Basque is currently in the midst of a period of 'active recuperation', basing himself at home in Durango and slowly building up the intensity of his training rides with his close friends from the region.
