New government design guide for cycling facilities

Advice includes 2m width for bike lanes

The UK government has published a new comprehensive guide to designing cycling facilities.

The guide, “Cycle Infrastructure Design”, is based on new advice from the Department for Transport, the Scottish Executive and the Welsh Assembly Government.

The document includes:

  • Advice on appropriate cycle facility provision in relation to traffic speed and volume.
  • A new recommended width of 2m for cycle lanes.
  • The five core design principles for cycle facilities: convenience, accessibility, safety, comfort and attractiveness.

Sustrans’ technical director, Huw Davies, encouraged all local authorities to take advantage of the document in their new designs. “This is a major step forward by the Department for Transport,” he said.
