Bike Belong Coalition launched its latest campaign to promote cycling at the Bicycle Leadership Conference and the Sea Otter Classic this week. People For Bikes is on a quest to gain a million signatures to support a better future for cycling across the US.
“We aim to create real momentum for the movement,” said Joan Harrold of Bikes Belong Coalition. “Each individual's name, combined with a million others, will be used to affect future legislation with a goal of improving bicycling infrastructure across the nation now and well into the future.”
People For Bikes is an initiative put together by Bikes Belong Coalition and a national group of bicycle suppliers and retailers who are working to put more people on bicycles more often. It was unveiled at the National Bike Summit on March 9 and more than 8,000 people have signed the pledge.
“As the next federal transportation bill and key legislative initiatives advance through Congress, we will encourage peopleforbikes.org supporters to directly and concisely express their support for bicycling at key moments in the process,” Harrold said. “We will help craft and relay these messages to make a powerful, timely expression of the public's interest in biking.”
“Every day, millions of Americans ride for their health, for the environment, for their communities, and for the pure joy of bicycling,” she added. “Until now, only a fraction of riders have stood up to help improve bicycling in America. We’re trying to not only unify existing advocates, but also reach beyond the group of advocates that are already engaged, and draw in those people who love to ride their bikes but never before have helped to improve biking in America. We’re talking to them with a new voice, one that is easy to understand, inclusive, and fun.”
People For Bikes was built using the expertise of existing bike advocacy groups and industry partners such as SRAM, Trek, Specialized, Fuji, Giant, Shimano, Raleigh, Saris Cycling Group and Interbike among others.
“They help to develop a powerful movement with the clout and influence to get things done,” Harrold said. “That means promoting biking on an individual level, but also sending a unified message to our elected leaders, the media, and the public that bicycling should have their full support.”
“Also, the goal for our movement is to unite all who bike,” she added. “We need everyone from manufacturers, distributors, retailers, bike advocates and individual riders all across our nation. By working together, we can reach our goal of making bicycling safer, more convenient and appealing for everyone.”
