Gilberto Simoni will not be leading the Lampre-Caffita team in the Tour de France, starting in Fromentine on Saturday. It had been expected that the 33-year-old Italian would pick up the reins of team leadership after Damiano Cunego was forced to pull out with glandular fever.

However, Simoni, who abandoned Sunday's Italian road championship, felt that he had been been fully committed since the very start of the season and did not have the physical resources left to lead the team at the Tour. Instead, he is now due to ride the Brixia Tour starting on July 22 and the Tour of Portugal in early August, before heading to the Vuelta later that month.

With their two main leaders sidelined from the race, Lampre are set to field a strong but hardly stellar team. Climbing options come in the shape of Eddy Mazzoleni, Evgeni Petrov and new Austrian champion Gerrit Glomser, while veterans Salvatore Commesso and Gianluca Bortolami offer significant impact in breakaways.

Their full line-up is Salvatore Commesso, Gianluca Bortolami, Evgeni Petrov, Eddy Mazzoleni, David Loosli, Gerrit Glomser, Alessandro Spezialetti, Daniele Righi and Gorazd Stangelj.
