Paris-Roubaix winner Stuart O'Grady was among a number of Australians caught up in a midweek altercation with nightclub staff which led to a hospital visit for fellow cyclist Chris Sutton, according to police in Nice Friday.
According to Nice Matin newspaper, Sutton, who rides for the Cofidis team, was slightly injured and taken to hospital after the incident which occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Sutton was with O'Grady and "other Australian athletes", according to the paper, celebrating a birthday party when there was a disagreement about the bill. The paper said blows were exchanged and Sutton was then taken to hospital with injuries to his face. The nightclub staff were interrogated police before being released.
Sutton recently won the Classic de l'Indre race, the 13th leg of the French Cycling Cup series.
CSC rider O'Grady, a former Olympic track champion, claimed his biggest one-day victory to date this season when he won the fabled Paris-Roubaix one-day classic.
