CSC have announced a new sub-sponsor for their team. They are Italian tap manufacturer Nobili, whose name will appear on the team jerseys for the first time at the Tour. "We see this sponsorship deal with Team CSC as a unique opportunity to get exposure for our brand internationally, and we are happy to have found a strong partner in Riis Cycling. We have commercial interests all over Europe, and that is why this sponsorship works for us," said Nobili export manager Carlo del Negro of the deal, which initially runs for one season.

- Illness forced I¤igo Cuesta out of the race on the eve of the first stage. The Spanish climber has been replaced in the Saunier Duval team by Swiss rouleur Rubens Bertogliati, a stage winner on the Tour a couple of years ago.

- Jan Ullrich made a brief sortie in front of the cameras on Friday evening to show that the injuries he picked up when he crashed into the back of a T-Mobile team car were nothing more than superficial. Sporting a largish plaster on the left side of his neck, Ullrich joked "I didn't know that Armstrong could drive trucks". The T-Mobile team car pacing Ullrich had to brake suddenly when a truck did the same in front of it going through a roundabout, resulting in Ullrich crashing through the car's back window. Although the incident was passed off as "not serious" by the team, they did admit that Ullrich's wounds were just three millimetres away from his carotid artery.
