Yellow jersey Tom Boonen (Quick Step-Innergetic) is the first rider since Greg Lemond in 1990 to wear the maillot jaune as reigning world champion. Lemond took the jersey much later on that year's race - on the penultimate day's time trial from Claudio Chiappucci - to record his third Tour de France title.

- And another world champion/yellow jersey-statistic first is the fact that the current top two riders on the general classification - Boonen and Michael Rogers (T-Mobile) - are the two reigning world champions on the road and in the time trial respectively.

- In his last Tour de France as race boss, Jean-Marie Leblanc - who is sharing the race directorship with his successor, Christian Prudhomme, this year - was honoured on the race route of Wednesday's fourth stage between Huy and Saint Quentin with a buffet laid on by the departement of Valjoly. Leblanc comes from the area, which came 123km into the 207km-long stage, and was joined, ahead of the race, by journalists and colleagues.
