A helpful north easterly wind led to the course record being broken three times in the Antelope RT three-up 50-kilometre event at Haddenham in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.
The event – which included the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Championships – was eventually won by the Shorter Rochford trio of Charles McCulloch, Mark Holton and Adam Duggleby, but only after two other teams had recorded impressive times which also broke the three-year-old record.
McCulloch had teamed up with Richard Bradley and Gavin Pardoe in 2006 to set the existing course record of 1:05:59 in Arctic-Shorter Rochford colours, but with a large and good quality field lined up that mark looked vulnerable from the start.
While Plowman Craven-Madison pulled out with key man Tony Gibb ill, the Shorter Rochford team looked set to slug in out with the Sigma Sport trio of Steve Golla, Wouter Sybrandy and Jerone Walters.
But it was far from being a two-horse race, and first to lower the course record was the Arctic Premier RT team of Danny Axford, Darren Barclay and David McGaw who sliced more than a minute off the old mark with 1:04:57.
With an early start that time was the fastest for much of the event, but the Shorter Rochford team lowered the record further to 1:03:33. The Sigma Sport team ploughed round the course in impressive time, but their time of 1:04:19, although beating the old course record, was only good enough for second on the day.
Meanwhile, Leeds University took the student championship, retaining the title ahead of Cambridge and Oxford in second and third respectively.
Clocking 1:07:39, Lee Tunnicliffe, Mike Dales and Henry King were 24 seconds quicker than Cambridge, who had the consolation of winning the women’s title through Rachel Fenton, Willow Kemp and Hannah Brice.
Poupart wins 'hardest hardrider of them all'
Having punctured in the closing few miles of the 2008 event, Gavin Poupart (Echelon-Spiuk) had no such bad luck this time in the Dursley Road Club hardriders’ 27.2-mile event in South Gloucestershire.
Poupart clocked 1:20:00 to win by just three seconds from Giant CC’s Rob Lyne, while veteran Chris Madge took third, the Leisure Lakes rider clocking 1:20:41.
Still recovering from injury, last year’s winner Jeff Jones (Chippenham & District Wheelers) managed a good seventh place.
Elzinga triumphs in Oxonian 25
Elsewhere, American Jesse Elzinga won the Oxonian CC 25-mile event at Wootton on Sunday, and led Oxford University CC to the team prize in the event with an impressive time of 54:44.
The 30-year-old teacher beat top veteran Ray Hughes (Clarence Wheelers) into second spot by 47 seconds, while Warwickshire Road Club’s Matt Pursehouse completed the podium, another five seconds off the pace.
Pre-race favourites Steve Golla and Lee Foster were non-starters, leaving Elzinga to take victory from number 15 on the start sheet.
Dennis best in Southern Counties 25
East Grinstead CC’s Steve Dennis looked in commanding form in the Southern Counties CA 25 at Horsham, West Sussex, on Sunday.
He clocked 54:13 to win by more than a minute and a half from Guy Powdrill (SCCU PM). Third spot went to Keith Coffey (Bec CC) who had flown in from a holiday in Portugal at 3am on the morning of the event.
Lovatt wins Glossop Kinder Velo Mountain TT
Last year’s winner Charles Taylor had to settle for second this time round as Mark Lovatt (Planet X) won the Glossop Kinder Velo Mountain Time Trial in Derbyshire.
Taylor (South Pennine RC)was just eight seconds slower than Lovatt over a shortened 22.5-mile course which was altered because of roadworks on Rushup Edge.
Talented junior Jack Green (Westmead Team 88) was third with 1:06:01, who was also third in the previous day’s Manchester & District TTA 25-mile Championship in Cheshire.
Randle notches up another 10 victory
After his personal best 18:58 in the City Road Club 10 the previous week, Wayne Randle (Planet X) continued his winning form with victory in the Ravensthorpe CC 10.
On a tougher course he clocked 21:52, and took the win by 13 seconds from Pedalsport CC rival Andy Jackson. With third-placed Richard Dean and tenth-placed Nigel Haigh also riding for Planet X, they took the team prize as well.
