Updated: Fred Whitton Challenge record smashed

Rob Jebb and James Dobbin set the pace in tough UK sportive

Robert Jebb (Wheelbase.co.uk) and the UK National Hill Climb Champion James Dobbin (Arctic Premier RT) set a new course record of 5 hours 40 minutes in the 112 mile Fred Whitton Challenge, staged in the UK's Lake District on 11 May. The pair took five minutes off last year's course record, set by Stuart Reid and Lewis Craven (Wheelbase.co.uk).

1000 riders took part in the sportive, which started in Coniston and took in the Lake District’s toughest passes of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Cold Fell, Hardknott and Wrynose.

Participation in sportives has risen massively with British Cycling reporting a 35% increase in 2007. The Fred Whitton has been no exception with the 1,000 places selling out within three days of the event opening.
