PICTURE BY TIM DE WAELE With the Olympic Games road race just a couple of weeks away, Alejandro Valverde sent out a timely reminder to anyone who might have forgotten the extent of his all-round qualities by taking a clear-cut win on a hilly opening stage of the Tour of Burgos this afternoon (Monday). The stage culminated with the first-category climb of the Altotero up to the Poza de la Sal. Five kilometres from the summit finish, the Comunitat Valenciana-Kelme rider attacked, and only Leonardo Piepoli initially was able to follow. Nine other riders eventually got up to the two leaders. With 500 metres to the line, Valverde attacked again and this time there was no catching him. Illes Balears' Denis Menchov took second, three seconds down, with Chocolade Jacques' Mauricio Ardila third. Joseba Beloki finished almost nine minutes down on his first stage race appearance for Saunier Duval.
