Wiggins and Newton confirmed for Otley

Beijing bound athletes to ride Yorkshire event

Current World and Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins will ride the Elite Circuit Race as part of Otley Cycle Races 2008.

Wiggins’ Olympic and World pursuit team-mate Chris Newton has also accepted an invitation from the race, which he has won twice before. Wiggins will come to Otley following a gruelling ride in the Tour of Italy as part of the successful High Road team that launched fellow Brit Mark Cavendish to two stage victories.

Manxman Cavendish is also a past victor of the Otley race, winning in 2005 – the last time he and Wiggins both rode the race. If he too decides to ride this year then he will boost Otley’s strongest line-up ever in terms of international race-winners.

“It would be great for the race and the spectators if Cavendish was on the start line alongside Wiggins, Newton and the rest of our home-based professionals”, said former winner and current co-organiser of the event, Jonny Clay. “And with the race coming just days before the National Road Championships in Ryedale he could be in Yorkshire with all our top riders on that Thursday night and looking for a ride.”
