Athertons on song in Auld Reekie

Urban Downhill night race a capital success

The world’s first night time urban downhill race has been hailed a success after the UK’s best riders and over 5000 spectators hit the streets of Edinburgh city centre on Saturday night.

A total of 300 riders including Dan, Gee and Rachel Atherton and newly crowned DH world champion Ruaridh Cunningham raced through the streets of Auld Reekie, riding a downhill course which began at Edinburgh Castle and followed a tough, technical route which included steep steps, alleyways and jumps as well as a bridge built especially for the event. The highlight at the end of the course was a car jump, which was a big crowd pleaser.

Gee Atherton set the fastest time of 47:62 seconds and took the top podium spot. “The course worked very well,” he said. “It’s the first time I’ve ridden like this and all the flashes made it very interesting for the final run”.
