Didn’t find a bike under the Christmas tree? Did Santa forget that new groupset you were after? Don’t worry – the January sales are here so you can buy yourself what you actually wanted, and for a fraction of the cost. We call that winning.
January sales is something of a misnomer, as most of the major retailers have already started reducing products significantly – some even before Christmas. There are serious discounts on bikes, parts and accessories, plus clothing and protection. Discounts are mostly in the region of 30 to 50 percent, but there are discounts as high as 60 percent plus on some items.
We’ve reviewed various incarnations of the Genesis Croix De Fer over the years, and we’re usually pretty darn impressed, so if you’ve been after one here’s your chance to get one at a discount. A sturdy frame and Shimano Tiagra gearing combined with disc brakes make this a top choice for hard going, whether that’s taking on cyclocross racing, sportives or just hauling yourself to work and back.
The downside? It’s only available in limited sizes, but if you do happen to ride a 54cm or 60cm frame, you’re in luck!
The high5 race pack provides energy and nutrition products enough for a 4 hour mountain bike or road race:
Got some races down on your calendar to work towards in 2016? Good work. You can get yourself fuelled up for them with a bargain race energy pack from High5. For a mere £6.99 in the sale, you’ll get a bottle, energy gels, electrolyte drink, recovery drink and more.
We deemed the Giant Anthem 27.5 3 a ‘well specced trail-oriented mid-wheeler’ in our review this year, and it scored an excellent four out of five stars. Basically, it represents excellent bike per buck and now it’s got 33 percent off, it’s even better value!
Kona Process 167 (2015) mountain bike – £3999.99 £1895.13
Kona process 167:
Fancy a rather lush, full-suspension, all-mountain bike to tackle some interesting terrain in the new year? Would having more than 50 percent off the price tempt you further? For under two grand you can get the Kona Process 167, with slack angles for confidence on technical descents, SRAM X1 and X01 1×11 groupset, RockShox Lyrik fork, RockShox Vivid Aid shock and SRAM Guide brakes. Not bad, not bad at all.
The specialized sl expert spatial winter women’s cycling jacket:
When the weather is rotten (and it’s particularly rotten at the moment), a decent warm jacket is something to get excited about. The Specialized SL Expert Partial women’s jacket is designed to keep out the wind, resist mud and water, and trap heat with a warm, cosy fleece lining.
This Shimano Ultegra groupset comes with everything from bottom bracket to brakes, so you can give your road bike a belated Christmas present and yourself a significant upgrade. Even better, its got over 60 percent off it at the moment.
After a new helmet? If you’ve had yours a while it’s certainly worth getting a fresh one. We’re rather taken with the skeletal unicorn motif on this version of the Bell Stoker mountain bike helmet, though if that’s not your thing there are plenty of other options to suit all looks and styles.
A carbon fibre bike for under 600 quid? No, your eyes are no deceiving you. Felt already claims that the F7 is the most affordable carbon bike on the market, and with a further 50 percent off the price, it’s quite hard to argue with that. For the money you get a Shimano Sora groupset with 18 gears and a compact setup, internal cable routing and a tubeless-ready wheelset.
Raleigh RX Race Cyclo X Bike (2015) – £1849.99 £999.99
The raleigh rx race cyclocross bike:
Cyclocross – muddy, wet, hard, muddy, and did we mention the mud? It’s also an exceptionally fun and focused way to keep on top of your winter fitness. Plus, cyclocross bikes like this Raleigh RX Race also often make good commuter bikes, as they’re designed to take a little rough treatment. The Raleigh RX Race comes with a carbon frame, SRAM groupset and some decent Schwalbe Racing Ralph tyres.
Thule Sweden AB TH9104 clip-on rear cycle carrier – £94.99 £74.99
Thule ab th9104 bike rack:
You’ll need something to carry all the new bikes with, of course. The AB TH9104 clip-on rack from Swedish company Thule can handle three, and has compact integrated straps so there’s far less flapping about when you’re on the go.
Marin Rocky Ridge 7.6 mountain bike (2015) – £2,500.00 £1,189.00
Marin rocky ridge 7.6 mountain bike 2015 :
A hardtail with aggressive geometry, the Rocky Ridge from Marin is designed for riders who like technical trails. It got a mixed review from our team but the significant discount may be enough to swing it around – and we’re talking just over a grand for a bike with a RockShox Pike fork, SRAM X1 shifters and mech, Mavic XM423 tubeless-ready wheels and some serious rubber – Schwalbe Hans Dampf Evolution tyres front and rear.
If you’ve had enough of water flying off your wheels and into your face or up your back, then it’s time to invest in some mudguards. These full-length options from Blackburn are clip-on and relatively easy to fit.
Colnago World Cup road bike (2015) £1,499.95 £799.95
Colnago world cup bike:
It may be made of alloy, but in terms of frame geometry and design the Colnago World Cup is the equal of its pricier sibling the Prestige. The World Cup bike comes with a Shimano 105 11 speed groupset, Colnago cantilever brakes, Colnago CW28CL wheelset with Kendra Kwicker tyres and a Selle Italia X1 saddle.
The Mondraker Foxy RR Carbon has it all – carbon frame, Kashima-coated Fox 34 Float fork, SRAM X01 drivetrain, Forumla brakes, RockShox Reverb dropper post, Crankbrothers Cobalt 3 wheelset. Oh, and a 40 percent discount. How could we forget that?
Boardman Road Team Carbon road bike £999.99 £749.99
Boardman road team carbon bike:
We loved this bike when we tested it earlier in 2015, giving it four stars and commenting that it featured a “confident, dynamic and power friendly frame with surefooted, Continental tyre underlined handling”. Not bad for a bike that’s now well under a grand. If you’ve got a cycle scheme voucher that leaves you plenty of moolah for a new helmet and lights too.
Cannondale CAAD10 105 2014 road bike £1,299.99 £799.00
The cannondale caad10 105:
“Still a benchmark of sublime ride quality and lightweight alloy performance” – that’s how we summarised the CAAD10 105, and it’s now got a further 39 percent off it. What a bargain. You are getting the 2014 model for this price, but that includes a Shimano 105 groupset, alloy frame with carbon forks, and Shimano RS11 wheelset.
Marin Nail Trail 9.7 hardball mountain bike £1499.99 £699.99
The marin nail trail 9.7 hard tail:
The good news is there’s over 50 percent off the 2015 Marin Nail Trail, with aluminium frame, Rockshox Reba fork and SLX, XT and Deore groupset. A good hardtail bike for taking on the trails. The downside – there are only limited sizes left but there’s a great bargain to be had if the size suits! Plus Rutland has plenty more bargains in the January Sales section, clothing and accessories included.
