Biketreks Fred Whitton Challenge on May 11

The 10th annual sportive circles English Lake District

Early group on Holbeck Lane in 2007.

The 2008 Biketreks Fred Whitton Challenge is a 112-mile sportive to be held on May 11.

The event is run in memory of Fred Whitton, who was the Lakes Road Club racing secretary for many years, the Lakes and Lancs’ Division road racing secretary, an ex first category racer, a promoter of numerous road races including the Lakes three day, and an all round clubman who could drink a pint with the best of them. He died of cancer at the age of 50 in 1998.

The proceeds of the ride will be donated to the MacMillan Nurses and the Dave Rayner Fund. The sportive has raised over £115,000 to both charities.

Biketreks in Ambleside has helped the Fred Whitton Challenge from the very first event in 1999 and once again, they will be offering a free mechanical service on the event.

The Biketreks Fred Whitton Challenge is a gruelling 112-mile sportive ride for charity around the English Lake District, taking in six of the major passes en route. Held on Sunday 11th May this year, and the route starts & finishes at Coniston, and includes the climbs of Kirkstone Pass, Honister Pass, Newlands Pass, Whinlatter Pass, Cold Fell, Irton Pike, and finishes with the brutal Hardknott & Wrynose Passes.
