Cervelo sits up on new RS road frame

Paris Roubaix winning frame goes public

Road bike maker Cervelo, sponsor of the CSC ProTour team, unveiled just one new bike at the first indoor day of the Interbike show today, the RS.


Based on the successful R3, the bike on which Stuart O’Grady won Paris-Roubaix back in April, the RS is a tweaked for comfort for riders who are less flexible or who want a slightly more upright riding position.

However, Cervelo’s Phil White was keen to stress that this is not a ‘comfort road bike’ in the vein of, say Trek’s Pilot series. Rather, this is a still a serious road racing bike, it just better suits some riders including CSC’s Allan Johanson who was heavily involved in the development of the new frame.

Compared to the R3, the RS has a 27.2mm seat post (rather than 30.4mm), 1cm longer chainstays, slightly curved seatstays and a taller head tube, varying with size. Cervelo’s bikes always get shorter as they get smaller, even if that means over-lapping the front wheel and your shoes in the very small sizes. For the RS, the smaller sizes have a shallower head tube and each one has a custom fork, so that small sizes don’t have shoe overlap..

According to White, the long chainstay is a consequence of the slightly more upright stance of the RS. It simply restores the weight distribution and therefore the handling of the bike, he says.


Several other CSC team riders will be using the RS in 2008. Although this might sound like a specific Paris-Roubaix bike, in fact Cervelo hasn’t tweaked the tyre clearances on the RS. The company had Stuart O’Grady’s bike from this year’s win on display and it comfortably accommodates 27mm tyres.
