The Tour de France’s Grand Départ won the gold medal in the Sports Tourism category at Visit London’s 2007 annual awards ceremony last night.
According to the judges the event was organised: “with passion, flair and a real commitment to excellence. And with more than two million spectators gathering in London to watch the spectacle – and an estimated further audience of 15 million people worldwide – it provided a first class showcase event for London, further enhancing the City’s reputation as a major sporting destination.”
But the Grand Départ wasn’t cycling’s only success at the awards. Face Partnership took the bronze medal in Sports Tourism section for their Smithfield Nocturne. The judges noted that: “careful organisation and creative marketing ensured that, despite the pouring rain, crowds numbering over 5000 gathered in Smithfield market to support the 200 cyclists competing across 5 races in the famous streets of London. All in all, Face Partnership showed impressive commitment to quality. A great first year!”
Fran Millar of Face Partnership said: “We’re over the moon. The event was a fantastic opportunity for us to work in London, our home city and superb venue for cycling. We look forward to making the Rapha Condor Smithfield Nocturne bigger and better next year.”
