Cycling Plus magazine celebrates the success of Team GB

Three special-edition Olympic covers for Gold winners

Cycling Plus magazine is celebrating the enormous success of the British Olympic cycling team by running three special limited-edition Olympic covers for the October issue of Cycling Plus [on sale Friday 12th September].

Celebrating the tremendous achievements of the winning cyclists, Cycling Plus has chosen what it considers the three most outstanding performances from the Beijing Olympics. The cover stars will be triple Gold medallist Chris Hoy, double Gold winner Bradley Wiggins, and Gold road race champion Nicole Cooke. Each cover will feature the winning cyclist in action and will be a collectors’ item, marking this huge event in the history of British cycling.

Including the Golds, Team GB won a total of 14 medals for cycling at the Beijing Olympics, a haul which would put them 8th on the overall medal table if they were a nation.

The performances from whole team were simply outstanding, as well as a world record for the Men’s Team Pursuit sprint, Rebecca Romero became the first British woman to win Olympic medals in two sports after winning a silver medal for rowing in the Athens 2004, and three-times world sprint champion Victoria Pendleton sealed her title as she took the gold medal for the Women’s Sprint.

Nicole Cooke won the first medal of the Games in the Women’s Road Race, also claiming the title of the first British rider to win Gold in the Olympic road race. Bradley Wiggins won two Gold medals in Beijing, successfully defending his Olympic Individual Pursuit title, and ‘flying Scotsman’ Chris Hoy won a total of 3 Gold medals, making him the most successful British Olympian at a single Games for 100 years.

On sale Friday 12th September – the October issue of Cycling Plus allows readers to share in the celebration of the British cycling team, with a report on the Olympic Games from Richard Moore, the highly acclaimed cycling journalist and author of Heroes, Villains and Velodromes. The issue will also include Cycling Plus’ usual mix of product reviews, inspirational rides and features.

Rob Spedding is Editor of Cycling Plus:

“There were so many outstanding cycling moments in Beijing we could have run 14 different covers. As well as the stars we’ve selected we could have featured Victoria Pendleton, Rebecca Romero, the Men’s Team Pursuit squad of Wiggins, Paul Manning, Ed Clancy and Geraint Thomas, and Jamie Staff and Jason Kenny for their role in the Team Sprint victory. And then there was Emma Pooley in the time trial, Ross Edgar in the Keirin, Chris Newton in the Points race and Wendy Houvenaghel and Steven Burke in the Individual Pursuit. I’d like to have this problem when choosing covers every month!”
