Dartmoor Classic sportive heading for sell-out
With five months to go, the 2009 Dartmoor Classic cyclo-sportive is rapidly heading for another sell-out.
Of the 1500 places available, 900 have already been filled and a further 200 have been reserved by Devon County Council and TravelWise for local residents making their first attempt at this type of challenge.
“Unlike some other major events, we didn’t do the dramatic opening for entries on an early January date and have people sitting at their computers at midnight only to have their applications returned,” said chief organiser Ken Robertson.
“Without any fanfare or fuss, we simply and quietly started accepting entries back in October and processing them once a week as they came in.
“The system works really well for us and allows us to deal with any individual queries immediately,” Robertson added. “However, the last few weeks have seen the uptake accelerating, so it’s all starting to get a bit hectic and there are now only about 400 places left.”
Demand for places is expected to rise further after the Triathlon, Cycling and Running Show in Surrey on 7-8 February, where the cyclo-sportive will be promoted via a prize draw for a pair of Dartmoor Classic jerseys and free entry to the event.
The event at Dartmoor National Park is starting to attract overseas attention with recent entries arriving from the USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Holland and France.
