Fassa Bortolo deny that Fabian Cancellara is going anywhere, but clearly don’t feel the same attachm

PICTURE BY TIM DE WAELE After it had been widely announced that Tour de France prologue winner Fabian Cancellara had quit Fassa Bortolo to join Phonak, the Italian team has released a statement denying this is the case and insisting that the Swiss rider’s deal with them runs until the end of next season. The rider has also denied any such deal has been done. How Fassa stage race leader Aitor Gonzalez must have wished for such a show of support following his own stage win at the Tour. Instead, after two seasons featuring many more downs than ups, the 2002 Vuelta winner looks set to be shown the exit door come the end of the year. The last straw for Fassa team boss Giancarlo Ferretti was hearing criticism of his team’s race planning made by Gonzalez in the Spanish press. Gonzalez was reported as saying the Italian team favoured the Classics over the major tours. Responding at the Vuelta yesterday, Ferretti stated: “Gonzalez must show something which he has not so far done in the two years with us, otherwise I can say with total confidence that he will not be staying with the team since we have seen no return on his contract. We have done all we can to get him to his top level but he hasn’t taken advantage of the opportunities offered.”
