The world’s best riders are heading for Scotland… and so are we

Doddy is fine-tuning his downhill beast, Fin has just nipped around to the Esso garage to fill up the Ford Ranger and grab a few packets of Jaffa Cakes, and there’s something strange in the air (and it’s not last night’s curry) . Why? Because next weekend (5-6 June) sees the Mountain Bike World Cup come to Scotland and the MBUK crew are preparing to head up the motorway to take in all the action and party with the world’s best…

No doubt about it, the Fort William Mountain Bike World Cup is mint. It’s racked up four international awards in the past two years, including the title of best Downhill and 4-Cross World Cups in both 2002 and 2003 and this year’s event looks set to top the lot.

Over 400 world class riders from more than 35 countries will be racing at Fort Bill in the Nevis Range, watched by 15,000 spectators, including us lot from MBUK and, if you’ve got any sense, you too.

Things kick off on Friday night with the Opening Ceremony and old mucker Martyn Ashton will be centre stage at Animal’s Trials Show in the High Street with a whole bunch of radical action that’ll set the tone for the rest of the weekend. There’s a North Shore Trail in the Old Fort and the official World Cup Opening Party to take in before any racing actually kicks off…

Then there’s the small matter of tons of top racing from the biggest stars in the world going on right through the weekend. We’ll be there to see if any of the Brit boys can take the Fort Bill DH crown from reigning champ Cedric Gracia, hooking up with Specialized Lunatic Fringe dudes Chris Powell and Jordie Lunn for a piece in the mag, trying to spot the latest prototype kit on the pro’s bikes, and trying to blag as much alcohol as possible. Ah well, all in a day’s work…

Miss it, miss-take. Go to for all the info and we’ll see you up there.
