Gee Atherton qualifies first in Fort William

Mountain bike world cup kicks off in the Scottish Highlands

Qualification has just finished at the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in FortWilliam and the UK’s own World Champion, Gee Atherton is sitting pretty with the fastest qualifying time of 4:43.34.

Atherton pipped Greg Minnaar to first position by just 0.42 seconds. Mick Hannah continued his epic form in 2009 with a 3rd place, 2.61 seconds back.

Fort William hero, Steve Peat is still suffering with a damaged hand and some rear shock ‘issues’, which saw him crossing the line in 5th place, over six seconds back. You can be sure that the blonde bomber has more in the tank and is sure to light it up for tomorrow’s final.

Sam Hill was sporting some ludicrous, luminous pyjamas in his qualification, which is sure to have distracted him enough that he only managed 6th place in qualification. We are sure some wardrobe adjustments could see him move up the leader board in the final.

In the women’s event it is a positively Gallic affair, with French riders Sabrina Jonnier and Emmeline Ragot taking first and second spots respectively.

Crowd favourite and on-form Tracey Moseley took third spot, but as one of the most experienced female racers on the circuit, she is sure to have par boiled her qualification run and will turn it up to gas mark nine for the final.

The 4X event is due to kick off shortly and the hot tip has to be heat 11, with Mikael Prokop and Will ‘The Thrill’ Longden taking on the might of Richard Cunnynghame. That is one ding dong battle you don’t want to miss!
