Gerolsteiner may continue; Eindhoven race stops

Replacement sponsor rumoured for German team

Gerolsteiner may have a replacement sponsor

New sponsor interest for Gerolsteiner

German cycling team Gerolsteiner may have found a new sponsor to replace the mineral water company who will withdraw their support at the end of the year.

After the negative publicity surrounding the 2007 Tour de France, the cycling team was informed by the mineral-water bottling company Gerolsteiner last September – after ten-years of sponsorship – the arrangement will cease at the end of 2008.

But the Pro Tour team has now had interest from an anonymous company interested in sponsorship for the start of the 2009 season, team manager Hans Michael Holczer told German sports agency SID on Thursday.

So far the discussions are at an early stage, but Holczer is confident an agreement can be reached.

Eindhoven team time trial stops

The UCI has announced the demise of the Eindhoven team time trial, a ProTour event that has been run for the last three years. The Mayor and municipal representatives of the Dutch city have decided to stop supporting the race, the only team time trial on the UCI calendar.

In a statement, the UCI said that it regretted Eindhoven’s decision, while thanking it for its commitment to the race over the last three years. Discussions are currently underway with the teams as to whether the race should be replaced by another team time trial or a different event.
