Liquigas, led by Danilo Di Luca, crossed the finish line in 33 minutes, 35 seconds. The 25.6km hilly first stage from Caprera to La Maddalena stretched the resolve of several teams, including Discovery, whose team leader Yaroslav Popovych crashed in a technical section in the last kilometer. The team recovered enough for fifth overall. While Di Luca is the Liquigas team’s designated leader, a harmless oversight resulted in his teammate Gasparotto crossing the line first, putting him in the leader’s jersey. “I was not upset, it is important that we win,” Di Luca said. “We have great team. It is truly beautiful. It was great test for the team; I am not upset.” 2007 Giro d’Italia Stage 1: Caprera – La Maddalena (Team TT) 24km Stage 1 team results 1 Liquigas 00:33:35 2 Astana 00:33:51 3 CSC 00:34:08 4 Lampre-Fondital 00:34:17 5 Discovery Channel 00:34:27 6 Acqua & Sapone-Caff 00:34:38 7 Tinkoff Credit Systems 00:34:42 8 Crdit Agricole 00:34:51 9 Caisse d’Epargne 00:35:01 10 Quickstep-Innergetic 00:35:01 11 Saunier Duval-Prodir 00:35:03 12 Predictor-Lotto 00:35:06 13 Gerolsteiner 00:35:10 14 Milram 00:35:11 15 Cofidis 00:35:16 16 T-Mobile 00:35:23 17 Rabobank 00:35:23 18 Ceramica Panaria-Navigare 00:35:39 19 Bouygues Telecom 00:35:45 20 Ag2r Prvoyance 00:35:55 21 Euskaltel-Euskadi 00:36:28 22 Franaise Des Jeux 00:36:28 General classification after stage 1 1 Enrico Gasparotto (Ita, Liquigas) 2 Danilo Di Luca (Ita, Liquigas) 3 Vincenzo Nibali (Ita, Liquigas) 4 Franco Pellizotti (Ita, Liquigas) 5 Andrea Noe’ (Ita, Liquigas) 6 Charles Wegelius (GBr, Liquigas) 7 Alessandro Vanotti (Ita, Liquigas) 00:00:02 8 Paolo Savoldelli (Ita, Astana) 00:00:13 9 Eddy Mazzoleni (Ita, Astana) 10 Andrey Mizourov (Kaz, Astana) 11 Dmitriy Muravyev (Kaz, Astana) 12 Serguei Yakovlev (Kaz, Astana) 13 Fabian Cancellara (Swi, Team CSC) 00:00:30 14 David Zabriskie (USA, Team CSC) 15 Andy Schleck (Lux, Team CSC) 16 Kurt-Asle Arvesen (Nor, Team CSC) 17 Volodymir Gustov (Ukr, Team CSC) 18 Damiano Cunego (Ita, Lampre – Fondital) 00:00:42 19 Francisco Javier Vila Errandonea (Spa, Lampre – Fondital) 20 Marzio Bruseghin (Ita, Lampre – Fondital) 21 Paolo Tiralongo (Ita, Lampre – Fondital) 22 Marco Marzano (Ita, Lampre – Fondital) 23 Sylvester Szmyd (Pol, Lampre – Fondital) 24 Jos Luis Rubiera Vigil (Spa, Discovery Channel) 00:00:49 25 Volodymyr Bileka (Ukr, Discovery Channel) 26 George Hincapie (USA, Discovery Channel) 27 Yaroslav Popovych (Ukr, Discovery Channel) 28 Steven Cummings (GBr, Discovery Channel)
