PIC BY TDWSPORT.COM Gerolsteiner sprinter Danilo Hondo won the opening stage of the Tour of Murcia this afternoon, beating Liberty Seguros’ Allan Davis to the win in Molina de Segura. The main break of the day involved Andrea Tafi (Saunier Duval) and Peter Wuyts (MrBookmaker.com). The pair forged a lead of four minutes in the latter half of the stage, but were hauled in 12km from home after some hard driving on the front of the peloton by the Gerolsteiner and Liberty teams. Damiano Cunego and Joseba Beloki both finished in the main pack on their first European stage racing appearances of this season. They and the other big names racing in Murcia should get more of a chance to shine in Thursday’s 24km time trial in Alhama. Illes Balears’ Ivan Gutierrez won the equivalent stage in this event last year and is the favourite again. Today’s Memorial Samyn race in Belgium was called off because of heavy snow in the southern part of the country.
