Italy’s Alessio Galletti has collapsed and died during today’s Naranco hill-climb event around the Asturian city of Oviedo in northern Spain. According to Spain’s EFE news agency, the 37-year-old Galletti collapsed when riding up the Manzaneda climb, 15km from the finish.
Although rushed immediately to the Hospital Central de Asturias in Oviedo, the Pisa-based Naturino-Sapore di Mare rider could not be revived.
Galletti turned pro with the Lampre team in 1994, and subsequently rode for Panaria, Ros Mary, Amore e Vita, Saeco and, in 2004, Domina Vacanze before joining Naturino at the start of this season. He is perhaps best known by English-speaking fans as a stage winner on the Tour Down Under in 2001.
